The Coast Cultural Festival, Sail Húsavík 2011, is the beginning of an extensive Nordic cooperation that focuses on individuals, institutions and associations. Through this cooperation individuals from the grass-roots will be activated alongside the most qualified professional people within institutions that deal with environmental questions, archaeology, food culture, dance or handicrafts related to the coast and the ocean.
The Festival is prepared and carried out based on the strategic policy of the Nordic Council of Ministers. The purpose of the Festival is to be a forum for amateurs and specialists to meet, to learn, to exchange information and ideas and to create relationships and networks. The purpose is also to support coastal developments and cultures, demonstrating that to the general public, making people conscious of this part of each country’s cultural heritage and this part of the earth’s ecological system and the threats that are eminent.
Through the Nordic Coast Cultural Festivals we support some meaningful activities focusing on Nordic environmental questions and coast cultures and introduce these ideas to the closest neighbourhood. Through this project we hope to strengthen cooperation and innovation in the most sparsely populated areas of each country.
The first festival will be held in Húsavik, North Iceland during the summer of 2011. After that the festival will be held annually in different Nordic countries starting with Denmark in 2012.
Our aim is to preserve clean and healthy oceans and respect our cultural heritage in the coastal regions.
