Sail Húsavík

SAIL HÚSAVIK is not a competition but a journey or an excursion based on friendship and the desire to discover something new. Most of the sailing excursion will be in the company of larger ships as we participate in town-festivals and we sail the same route as the first settlers, including the Swedish Gardar Svavarsson in the year 870. SAIL HÚSAVÍK is an ode to the sea, to boats and coastal cultures. We are expecting thousands of guests traveling by sea or by land. WE WELCOME YOU ALL.

Organizers

The Coastal Cultural Festival SAIL HÚSAVÍK 2011 is the beginning of a wide ranging Nordic cooperation which involves many individuals, societies and institutions. Through this cooperation, individuals working on the grass-root level will be involved along with the most outstanding professionals within the institutions of environment, archaeology, food culture, music, dance and handicraft created at the coast and by the sea.

The purpose of the Festival is to be the platform for professionals and the general public to meet, learn, share and create relationships. We wish to support the developments and cultures in the coastal regions and present this to the general public with the intention to open people’s eyes to the importance of this part of the earth’s ecosystem and the threats that it is faced with and thus support the emphasis in Nordic environmental issues and coastal cultures.

We invite everybody to come and find out about Nordic coastal cultures and the first Festival will be held in Húsavík, July 16-23 and then Denmark will follow suit. The Festivals will last a few days with seminars, lectures, many types of courses and exhibits. Furthermore there will be markets every day where you can buy food and Nordic handicrafts.

We who are organizing this Festival are members of Nordic grass-root societies with emphasis on coastal culture in cooperation with local people, individuals, institutions and professionals.
